As of late I’ve found the easiest way to get the fruit and veg down is by mixing up smoothies, especially first thing in the morning and since getting in to this new liquid breakfast I’ve also discovered I can go one step further and add some collagen to all that goodness. This has been especially appealing whilst pregnant and Vital Proteins has been my go to collagen supplement to throw in to my smoothies as well as breakfast bowls, water and beverages and know that I am getting so much goodness out of them, even my boys like my smoothies and are keen to drink one too! Most of Vital Proteins formulas are odorless and tasteless making them perfect for recipes where you dont want an overpowering flavour, although I am a fan of the Vital Proteins’ Dark Chocolate & Blackberry Collagen Peptides which makes morning coffee based smoothie taste great!
What Is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein found in our muscles and skin and generally we do not get enough collagen in our diets and this is an important building block of our bodies including skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. Collagen helps regenerate our skin which we especially need as we get older as our bodies stop producing so much of this and which in turn makes our skin less supple and elastic, giving us those wrinkles and sagginess that we all want to avoid as we get older.
The Benefits of Collagen Supplements
Until I started looking in to the benefits further I wasn’t aware how many plus points this supplement can provide to giving us a healthier lifestyle, some of those benefits are:
- Glowing skin
- A more youthful appearance
- Joint health
- Tendon & bone strength
- Healthy cartilage
- Improved digestion
- Gut health
- Deeper sleep
Being past the mid thirties mark now I often feel like my skin lacks that twenty something glow and my nails often tend to feel more brittle than I like, especially in winter and collagen is great at giving that support to our bodies from within, helping support the skin’s moisture, improving elasticity, tone and vibrance and give that glow that we all like to have – I feel like im going to be searching for it wherever I can soon with baby 3 on the way and back to sleepless nights, I’m going to need all the energy i can muster.
Other benefits of collagen include gut health – some proteins can be hard for our stomachs to digest but collagen can help improve our gut tract and overall digestive health and another benefit…better sleep, who doesn’t want that in today’s world!?
If you are looking for a smoothie recipe to try out with some Vital Proteins collagen, give this one a go and let me know what you think:
Morning Banana, coffee, smoothie:
3/4 -1 cup of brewed coffee (or if like me you love your Nespresso machine then throw in a shot of espresso)
1 banana medium peeled
1-2 tablespoons of honey (raw manuka honey is great!)
Cocoa nibs to taste
1 tablespoon of almond butter
1 tablespoon of low fat plain yoghurt
(If you want to make this smoothie more of a breakfast shake and thicken it up I often like to throw in a handful of granola too!)
